ALA 2010: LJ Movers and Shakers HonoredÂ
By Rebecca Miller, LJ Jun 25, 2010As librarians arrived for the opening of the American Library Association's 2010 Conference Friday, Library Journal celebrated the 2010 class of Movers & Shakers in Washington, DC. Some 100 people, including many Movers from previous years, gathered at the National Press Club for a luncheon to honor the 2010 cohort.
"You are the people shaping libraries today and shaping the libraries of the future," said LJ editor-in-chief Francine Fialkoff. Movers & Shakers, which launched in 2002, has identified over 450 library innovators to date.
Journalist Gayle Tzemach Lemmon with engaged the group with her insights into the daily reality of women entrepreneurs making a living under the Taliban in Afghanistan. Her book, The Dressmaker of Khair Khana: Five Sisters, One Remarkable Family, and the Woman Who Risked Everything To Keep Them Safe, will be published by HarperCollins in March, 2011.
The event also marked the launch of losinglibraries.org, a website designed to capture a comprehensive national picture of library cuts and the local advocacy efforts to address them. (See Norman Oder's "Library Journal Helps Launch LosingLibraries.org" for more about the website.)
