Recommendation: Any new or backlist title from Small Beer Press because the award-winning publisher of literary fiction and fantasy is holding its 2009 Christmas Franciscan Fundraiser Sale. Through December 31, 2009, $1 from every book sold will be donated to Franciscan Children’s Hospital, where publishers Gavin Grant and Kelly Link’s adorable daughter Ursula, born prematurely February 23, 2009, currently receives top-notch care. If you pay full price, Small Beer will donate the difference between the full and sale price to Franciscan. If you are feeling especially generous, the entire library of Small Beer (30 books with a retail value of $540) can be purchased for $339.

Ideal Recipient: Readers of bibliomysteries like John Dunning’s "Bookman" series will appreciate Vincent McCaffrey’s debut, Hound, about a Boston bookseller who investigates his ex-lover’s death. Fans of fabulist fantasy and magical realism will delight in Kelly Link’s Magic for Beginners, a collection of tales about haunted convenience stores, rabbits, zombies, and much more, and adult readers who have discovered Holly Black’s best-selling YA faerie fantasies will eagerly anticipate her debut collection, The Poison Eaters & Other Stories (February 2010; available for preorder).

Nonbook Tie-In: For the hipster on your holiday gift list, how about a trucker’s cap promoting Small Beer’s literary zine Lady Churchill’s Rosebud Wristlet. A T-shirt for Fido? Or some sexy thong underwear for your significant other? But the ultimate tie-in is the warm satisfaction you’ll receive from giving to a worthy cause and supporting independent publishing.
